Biography

Ng'endo Mukii is an award-winning film director, most well known for ‘Yellow Fever,’ her documentary-animation exploring Western influences on African women's ideals of beauty.
Her work focuses on the use of the moving image to unravel truths we prefer not to name. At the prestigious Design Indaba conference she presented her talk, ‘Film Taxidermy and Re-Animation,’ proposing the use of animation as a means of re-humanising the ‘indigenous’ image; a people whose ‘real’ image is burdened with stereotypes and prejudices of being the ‘Other.’
Ng’endo is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in Film Animation and Video, and holds a Master of Arts in Animation from the Royal College of Art. She is an alumni of the beautiful Berlinale Talents, the distinguished Urucu Media REALNESS Screenwriter’s Residency, and the incredible Goethe Institute Bahia Vila Sul artists’ residency.
Her films have won numerous awards, including Silver Hugo for the Best Animated Short at the Chicago International Film Festival, Best Short Film at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, Best Animation at Kenya's Kalasha Awards, and the Encounters Immersive Grand Prix. The latter was for her first 360/Virtual Reality film, Nairobi Berries.
Ng’endo is an avid muser, occasional printmaker and part time lecturer. She is a writer on multiple upcoming Netflix series, and works in Nairobi as an independent filmmaker.
